A 7-evening programme looking at the Islamic concept of serving society through developing leadership and media skills, and effective campaigns for change.

Module 1: The Islamic Perspective on activism
 
What is Activism, Islamic definition & Qur’an/hadith definition
The Ethics & Principles of Activism
Characteristics & Attributes of an Activist & Red Flags
Activism Perspectives – concise overview from a scriptural perspective - Qur’an & Hadith perspective, a Jurisprudence [fiqh and usul] perspective, and from a Historical perspective [prophets (as), companions (as), early scholars (rh)]
Importance of activism in Islam – what necessitates activism
Activism against materialism/consumerism, & its manifestations, greed & hoarding
Activism [fardh kifaya] and organic areas of Activism [fardh ayn]
 
 
Module 2: Setting the Scene – why do we need activism
 
 
Philosophical Ideas that are a threat to activism from a modern day context [consumerism, Individualism, Materialism, Capitalism, Globalisation, Neoliberalism]
 
History and context of the past 100-200 years resulting in campaigning and activism
History of activism & campaigning – past and present movements
Why do we need activism today?
Brief overview of economic and trade injustice, poverty, hunger, sustainability and environment
 
Module 3: The Steward’s Toolbox : Campaigning tools
 
Campaign skills and community organising
Planning a campaign: 
o Power mapping & power analysis
o Spectrum of allies
o Tactics: 
  • Lobbying and advocacy – insider and outsider techniques, petitions, protests
  • How government works nationally and internationally 
  • Networking & partnership building
o Basic media skills 
o Public speaking and teaching skills
