Gateway to Islam: Understanding the principles of Islam ***£65* Only***
For the newly practising, converts and the curious. Don’t know much about Islam? This is the perfect opportunity for you to understand what this religion is about. We will trace back to the beginning, learn who Muhammad (PBUH) is, what the basic beliefs and practices are, and deal with some of the modern day questions posed to vis a vis women, Jihad, politics, different groups and sects, etc.

Level 1 of a comprehensive Arabic language programme which covers classical and modern standard Arabic. It is based on EC’s full time Arabic language course and covers the GCSE Arabic specification through levels 1-3. It is suitable for anyone who has completed our foundation course or can read Arabic fluently.

For beginners to study the rules of tajweed and practice recitation under an expert teacher. Students will learn to recite their short surahs correctly and start applying the rules of tajweed to the Qur’anic text.

Islamic History: The Life of Muhammad
This course will trace the life of our prophet Muhammad SAW from the days before Islam, life in Makkah, migration, life in Madina, right up to his passing. As Muslims we must know the story of Islam and our Prophet and this course covers it in some detail.

The Fiqh of Money and Transactions
This course deals with the rules of financial transactions. We all buy and sell and deal in money, but do we know that Allah’s commands also govern this area of our life. How much of these commands are we aware of? This course will cover the rules of transactions in the shari’ah. A must for everyone.

Mustalah Al-Hadith: The Principles of Hadith
(Course taught in Arabic)
For students who have completed ISP1 and/or ISP2 Arabic at EC or its equivalent elsewhere and are ready to begin studying the Islamic sciences in Arabic. Using an Arabic text, this course will cover the nomenclature and principles of hadith developed by the hadith masters to articulate the methods used to preserve hadith by critically examining narrators and chains of transmission.

Rules of Taharah and Salah
A course on the rules of purification, wudhu, ghusl (bath), tayammum etc, and all aspects of prayer. Study the technicalities and be certain that your prayer is correct. This course is an absolute obligation if you have any uncertainty about this.

Getting married, already married, children getting married. There are weddings every weekend. Yet too many of us do not know anything about the principles, and dos and donts of marriage. What makes a Muslim a believer? A course on the fundamentals of Islamic creed
A unique Aqeedah course covering the basic articles of imaan that are essential to one's faith. Students will learn about the importance of correct beliefs and how the ulama developed this into a subject of study to preserve the correct beliefs of Islam. The courses briefly deals with sects, classical and contemporary differences of opinion without being polemical, but rather with a view to giving the student a perspective that will enable him/her to remain strong on faith and avoid getting sucked in to debates and polemics.

Ijtihad and the following of Madhhabs,
based on Shah Waliyullah’s Work
A one day course about the principles related to Ijtihad and Taqleed based on the short treatise on the topic by Shah Waliyullah the 18th century Muhaddith of Delhi, ‘Iqd al-Jeed fi Ahkam al-Ijtihad wa al-taqleed. The course will answer questions regarding the nature of taqleed, and Ijtihad, who is a mujtahid, must we follow a madhhab, can we study ourselves and follow Qur’an and Sunnah directly etc, etc.

Moments for the Soul: Commitment and Sacrifice
Our seasonal Tarbiyah Session
Every season with the many courses we run at EC, we want to also run an event for everyone that serves as food for the soul. So that we are not just focussing on academic courses without trying to develop and inspire our hearts and bodies to embody what we learn. We will run such a session at least once a season. This season's session will be on ‘Commitment and Sacrifice’. There is a Q&A in each session. This session is necessary for all EC students but also open to the wider public.
