| Since the fall of the Mughals in India, one of the most important and influential Muslim scholars instrumental in Islamic revival across the Indian subcontinent was Shah Waliullah Muhaddith Al-Dehlawi (rh). His magnum opus was the Hujjatullâh Al-Bâlighah, a two-volume Arabic manuscript covering the principles of Islamic revival, whose lessons are more pertinent than ever in today's society. This classic work still influences the majority of Islamic groups and movements that have originated from India, including the Deobandi, Ahle-Hadith and Barelwi schools of thought. This course aims to cover: Shah Waliullah's Life; Establishment of Hadith Scholarship in India, Shah Waliullah's Role as a Reformer, Shah Waliullah's Writings, Hujjatullah Al-Balighah - An Exposition of the Rationale of Shari'ah and An Intellectual Interpretation of Hadith, Comparison of this Work with Earlier Writings on the Subject, Irtifaq (sociability), Siyasat al-Madinah (Issues Related to Civil Society), Concept of Sa'adah (Happiness through Success), Creeds and Devotion, Comprehensive Prophethood, Methods of Discussing the Meanings of Ahadith, Shah Waliullah's Legacy. | ||||||||

HISTORY OF THE MONGOLS & THE IMPACT ON ISLAM AND MUSLIMS
| From the King of Kings of the East and West, the Great Khan to Qutuz the Mamluk, who fled to escape our swords: You should think of what happened to other countries and submit to us. You have heard how we have conquered a vast empire and have purified the earth of the disorders that tainted it. We have conquered vast areas, massacring all the people. You cannot escape from the terror of our armies. Where can you flee? What road will you use to escape us? Our horses are swift, our arrows are sharp, our swords like thunderbolts, our hearts as hard as the mountains, our soldiers as numerous as the sand. Fortresses will not detain us, nor arms stop us. Your prayers to God will not avail against us. We are not moved by tears nor touched by lamentations. Only those who beg our protection will be safe. Hasten your reply before the fire of war is kindled. Resist and you will suffer the most terrible catastrophes. We will shatter your mosques and reveal the weakness of your God and then we will kill your children and your old men together. At present you are the only enemy against whom we have to march." (Part of a letter from Mongol ruler Hulegu Khan recorded in Al-Mawâ'iz wal-I'tibâr bi Dhikr al-Khitât wal-Âthâr, Al-Maqrîzi, Vol 1, pp 515-516) With most of the known civilisations of Eurasia destroyed and under Mongol control, the battle of 'Ain Jalût was set and only the Muslims stood in the way. The Sultan, Sayfuddîn Mahmûd Al-Qutuz spurred by the support of the Sultan of Scholars, Al-'Izz ibn 'Abd al-Salâm, climbed on a rock, throwing his helmet away, shouting "Wâ Islâmâh, Wâ Islâmâh", urging the army to keep firm and fight the enemies of Allah. (Târikh Misr al-Islâmiyyah, Al-Shayyâl, Vol 2, p 123) "The Tatar march is aught else but the news; That the Ka‘bah has found new guardians in pagan hordes." (Poet Allamah Muhammad Iqbal, Jawab-e-Shikwa - Response to the Complaint) The rest is history .. The Mongols had a profound effect on Muslim civilisation, from which, some say, we have still not recovered to this day. Based on Islamic sources this short introductory course will provide an overview of the following topics: Origins of the Mongols and Differences between Turks and Mongols; Genghis Khan - His Empire, Legacy and Mongol Strategy; Mongol Conquests of the Islamic World; Al-'Izz ibn 'Abd al-Salâm and the Call for Jihad; 'Ain Jâlût and the Remaking of History; Mongol Withdrawal; Mongols Embrace Islam and Later Formation of Muslim Mongol Empires; Pax Mongolica and the Silk Road; Decline of Mongol Power; The Effects of the Mongols and Lessons to be Learned. | ||||||||

THE ISLAMIC HISTORY OF BENGAL
| Following the successes of the Shah Jalal event last year and the History of India course more recently, we are pleased to organise a more detailed course on the Islamic History of Bengal. Given its distance from Delhi, Bengal was always seen as a frontier region of Muslim India. However, not only was it the richest state in Hindustan, but at one time the number of Muslims in Bengal was higher than any other part of the Muslim world. Being so far from the traditional centres of Islamic learning and history, how and why did such a large Muslim population emerge there? Join us as we embark on an enlightening journey to learn how some of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) traversed through these lands. Pioneering individuals such as Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, 'Asim ibn 'Amr al-Tamimi and 'Abdullah ibn 'Utban established the path for many others to follow, including Bakhtiyar al-Khilji, Shah Jalal al-Din ibn Muhammad and Bayazid al-Bistami, as well as the inspirational visits of great Muslim travellers such as Ibn Battuta, Admiral Zheng He and Ma Huan. | ||||||||

FIQH OF SAWM AND ZAKAH ( ISP1* mod2)
Fasting and Zakah are two of the five pillars of Islam and are both fardh 'ayn (obligatory on every individual). With Ramadhan so near, every Muslim must take spiritual and academic preparation for it. It is also common for Muslims to choose Ramadan as the ideal month to fulfil the Zakah obligation as their reward is multiplied by paying their Zakah in the holy month of Ramadhan. For every act of worship undertaken by a Muslim there is always an additional obligation: seeking enough knowledge about it so that it is performed correctly. This is known as obligatory knowledge. Just as fasting and Zakah are fardh 'ayn, so too is seeking knowledge about them fardh 'ayn. A fact often not understood or under-emphasised by many Muslims. We have organised two short courses to help brothers and sisters fulfil this obligation effectively. These courses are designed to cover all of the necessary knowledge needed to discharge these two duties correctly as well as maximise reward from Allah swt. Each course will comprise the following: The Fasting Course

LEVEL 1 TAJWEED AND QIRA'AH (ISP1* mod 1)
| Tajweed is the art of reciting the Qur'an correctly and beautifully; it is essential for every person who recites the Qur'an even if just in salah. Our recitation in salah is directly addressed to Allah (SWT) and it is a pity that so many people make severe mistakes in it because of a lack of implementation of tajweed rules. This course is for beginners introducing the rules of tajweed, and elementary training under the teacher. This course will ensure that students recite their short surahs correctly and get them started on applying the rules of tajweed as they read the Qur’anic text. | ||||||||||||||||

|
The Zakah Course:

Fiqh of Hajj & Umrah
We often try to learn about hajj and umrah from talks in the masjid: no notes, no resources and thus no real learning. Learn all about the rules and practical ins and outs of performing Hajj and Umrah in a structured course, the sacred pilgrimage carried out by the Prophet Ibrahim AS and taught to us by our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW. The course will cover every aspect of Hajj and Umrah equipping every participant with the technical and practical knowledge to be able to deal with all of the various situations one will encounter when performing hajj. Learn to avoid common pitfalls and find out ways in which you can maximise the use of your time whilst you are visiting the House of Allah SWT. The teacher will be an expert on the theory of Hajj and Umrah as well as someone who has undertaken the journey and thus will be about to inform you of the many modern day issues that are likely to affect you when you make your journey and whilst you stay in Saudi Arabia. You will also be given plenty of advice on clever ways in which you can make your hajj journey as hassle free as possible and avoid practical difficulties. MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE IN ISLAM
| Study the principles upon which valid marriage is based and understand the distribution of rights within the marital relationship between husband and wife. Also learn about the elements which can break a marriage and about the various stages of divorce and the correct method of affecting it should it unfortunately become necessary. This course is essential for young people planning to marry and those who have already married. It is surprising how much more we can learn about matters that we might think are common sense or cultural. Islam has given very specific guidance to the married couple so that they can have a fulfilling life; where it does not work out, marriage can be ended correctly, and thus social integrity is maintained in and out of marriage. This course will cover the whole chapter of marriage and divorce as discussed by the ulama over the centuries. | ||||||||
